Upon watching the first episode, I wasn’t sure that I’d stick with the series but I’m happy that I did; it soon gets its hooks into you. And despite its relative age and ‘daytime soap’ vibe, this drama based on a true story still packs an emotional punch, and the corniness of the staging and plot beats is mitigated by the sincerity of the production. However, there are obvious embellishments designed to ‘lift’ the narrative, making it more accessible to a wider audience. (Which isn’t to say that Aya Kitō’s diaries haven’t had extensive reach in Japan, if not the world.)
