General UL Burglary Safe Requirements

Burglary Safe Ratings: UL, TL, TRTL & TXTL Explained (1)In addition to other specifications all safes must meet the following minimum criteria to be considered for a UL rating:

  • Minimum weight of 750 lbs or anchor points for mounting.
  • Body constructed of minimum 1 inch thick steel or equivalent strength steel alloy (or other material).
  • Must have at least 1 of: UL Group 1, 1R, or 2M combination lock/ Type 1 high security electronic lock.
  • Steel and iron must be protected against corrosion.
  • Net working time of at least 5 minutes.

Overview of All Ratings (Ordered from lowest to highest level of protection)

Class UL TL-15:

  • Burglary Safe Ratings: UL, TL, TRTL & TXTL Explained (2)Minimum weight of 750 lbs or is capable of being anchored to secure surface.
  • Minimum 1 inch thick steel (or equivalent) used for cast or fabricated body fastened by 1/4 inch penetration welds.
  • Must have at least 1 of: UL Group 1, 1R, or 2M combination lock/ Type 1 high security electronic lock.
  • Optional secondary UL Group 1, 1R, or 2M combination lock/ Type 1 high security electronic lock/ Type 2 key lock.
  • Net working time of 15 minutes.
  • Tool resistance from common hand tools, picking devices, handheld power tools, pressure devices, and high speed drills with carbide bits not exceeding 1/2 inch in diameter.

Class UL TL-15×6:

  • Minimum weight of 750 lbs or is capable of being anchored to secure surface.
  • Minimum 1 inch thick steel (or equivalent) used for cast or fabricated body fastened by 1/4 inch penetration welds.
  • Must have at least 1 of: UL Group 1, 1R, or 2M combination lock/ Type 1 high security electronic lock.
  • Optional secondary UL Group 1, 1R, or 2M combination lock/ Type 1 high security electronic lock/ Type 2 key lock.
  • Secure door and door jamb.
  • Net working time of 15 minutes from all 6 sides.
  • Tool resistance from common hand tools, picking devices, handheld power tools, pressure devices, high speed drills with carbide bits not exceeding 1/2 inch in diameter, cutting wheels, and saws.

Class UL TL-30:

  • Minimum weight of 750 lbs or is capable of being anchored to secure surface.

  • Optional secondary UL Group 1 or 1R combination lock/ Type 1 high security electronic lock/ Type 1 key lock.
  • Secure door and door jamb.
  • Net working time of 15 minutes from all 6 sides.
  • Tool resistance from common hand tools, picking devices, handheld power tools, pressure devices, high speed drills with carbide bits not exceeding 1/2 inch in diameter, cutting wheels, saws, and cutting torches.

Class UL TRTL-30:

  • Must have at least 1 of: UL Group 1 or 1R combination lock/ Type 1 high security electronic lock.

  • Secure door and door jamb.
  • Net working time of 60 minutes from all 6 sides.
  • Tool resistance from common hand tools, picking devices, handheld power tools, pressure devices, high speed drills with carbide bits not exceeding 1/2 inch in diameter, cutting wheels, saws, impact tools, and cutting torches.

Class UL TXTL-60×6:

  • Minimum weight of 1000 lbs.
  • Minimum 1 inch thick steel (or equivalent) used for cast or fabricated body fastened by 1/4 inch penetration welds. Must also have a minimum 3 inch concrete encasem*nt.
  • Must have at least 1 of: UL Group 1 or 1R combination lock/ Type 1 high security electronic lock.
  • Secure door and door jamb.
  • Net working time of 60 minutes from all 6 sides.
  • Tool resistance from common hand tools, picking devices, handheld power tools, pressure devices, high speed drills with carbide bits not exceeding 1/2 inch in diameter, cutting wheels, saws, impact tools, cutting torches, and high explosives.
