Made in Abyss: Does a Second Wind for [SPOILER] Mean an Inevitable Conclusion or a Change of Heart? (2024)

The following contains spoilers for Made in Abyss: The Golden City of the Scorching Sun Episode 11, "Value," now streaming on HIDIVE.

Episode 11 opens with Reg still alive but unconscious. Now, it seems that there's nothing standing between Faputa and the fulfillment of her goal. Even with the arrival of Nanachi and Belaf to stop her, it's hard not to question whether they can handle all that Reg endured. With all its barriers gone, Iruburu is subject not only to Faputa's wrath but also that of all the beasts inhabiting the abyss. Which one will ultimately destroy Iruburu and possibly end the trio's journey?

Faputa's rage persists, focusing now on why Reg can't remember their time together in its entirety. She sets her sights on Riko, deciding she must be the reason why Reg can't regain his memory in full. As Moogie, Maaa and the remaining villagers try to find shelter for Riko, a surprise attack occurs. Nanachi, aided by a slowly deteriorating Belaf, arrives to try and stop Faputa. Sensing that Belaf's large form is a result of him having consumed many of her siblings, Faputa redirects all her anger toward him. While Faputa attacks Belaf, he recalls that, despite asking every part of him to be consumed when he became a hollow, Irumyuui left his memories of her and the Ganja Corps intact. Belaf understands now that this was for Faputa's sake. With Faputa's finishing blow, he releases his memories in a cloud of smoke that engulfs Faputa. She is subjected to visions of her mother with Vueko and Belaf, feeling the depths of their connections to one another.

The sight of the memories makes Faputa falter, as she is now conflicted by her hatred for all that the Ganja Corps did to her mother and the apparent loving moments her mother shared with them. Faputa tries to remind herself that her purpose is to destroy the village and save her mother. Her attempt is foiled when she sees the same little hermit rats that her mother adored, bringing another rush of Irumyuui's memories. Her inner turmoil is interrupted when a beast of the abyss swoops in and takes a hermit rat in its mouth. With no barrier protecting them, the entirety of Iruburu is now vulnerable to countless creatures, and they quickly make their way inside the crumbling village walls to feast. The appearance of the beasts revitalizes Faputa's anger.

She views their arrival as taking away her sole purpose for existing. Though her attacks on the beasts mean she's technically saving the villagers, she's simply acting in retaliation so that she can continue her own destruction. Despite her immortality, however, Faputa is no match for the growing number of opponents, including the much-feared Turbinid Dragon. As she struggles to take on the growing number of beasts, the villagers also begin to feel a deep conflict within themselves. Even though the village was nearly decimated, Moogie and others are hurt by the sight of Faputa torn to shreds.

Because they've always revered her as the embodiment of value, and likely because they all carry some connection to Irumyuui as well, it's inevitable that they would be affected by her demise. The villagers come together to save Faputa, offering up parts of their bodies in exchange for her renewed strength. While she continues to spite the villagers for being selfish, she finds herself conflicted again when her healing comes with memories of those she's just consumed. The more she learns, the more Faputa questions whether there is a greater, hidden purpose for her beyond destroying Iruburu.

While Faputa struggles to resolve her inner conflict, Nanachi deduces that Wazukyan is likely planning to use Riko in the same way he used Irumyuui -- to create a new village to fulfill his wish of continuing his quest. Nanachi was warned by Belaf to watch out for Wazukyan, so it's up to them to figure out how to keep the past from repeating itself. Will Faputa care enough about Vueko's disappearance to turn her sights on Wazukyan, or will she return to her massacre once the beasts are out of her way? Should Faputa discover her new purpose, perhaps Nanachi can convince her to stop Wazukyan and the cycle of chaos that the Cradles of Desire brings about.
