Baseball is embedded in numbers, and they’re everywhere. Lineup cards, scorebooks, statistics, scoreboards, they’re literally everywhere.
Seymour graduate and incoming University of Indianapolis student Bret Perry was on point this season at the plate. Hitting his way to becoming The Tribune’s baseball player of the year. This is the third time Perry has received this honor in baseball. He also was the football player of the year last season.
He owns the baseball school records in batting average (.412), hits (136), runs (117), walks, (64), and stolen bases, (57).
He also has eight records in football: Passing yards (6,956), completions, (471), single-season pass yards, (3,427), single-season passing completions (224), single-season passing touchdowns (41), single-game passing touchdowns (6), single-game completions (33), and single-game passing yards (470).
Perry spoke about his career at Seymour High School.
“It means a lot to have a storied career at Seymour because I’ve put in a lot of hard work to be successful in each of those sports,” Perry said. “I give all glory to God.”
Perry must have seen a beach ball at the plate this season, hitting .411 with 30 hits, 24 runs, 6 doubles, 4 triples, 25 RBIs and 10 stolen bases. The graduate was a part of Hoosier Hills Conference championship teams in football (2022), basketball (2024) and baseball (2023). He spoke about his senior year.
“My senior season went by extremely fast because of the multiple rainouts,” Perry said. “Although we didn’t accomplish what we wanted as a team, I still had a lot of fun with my teammates and coaches. Overall, I was happy with my individual performance throughout the season.”
Perry said his brother Alan, whose record Bret broke for all-time hits this season, was a big part in why he became involved in baseball.
“What drew me to baseball was mainly watching my older brother play when I was younger,” Perry said. “My favorite thing about the sport is putting a great swing on the ball and getting on base.”
The decorated athlete is now moving to the University of Indianapolis to be in their middle infield. He spoke about what he’s looking forward to most.
“I am looking forward to competing for conference championships and World Series championships with my new teammates and new coaches in college,” Perry said.
