Spaghetti Stuffed Garlic Bread (2)

Everybody has memories as a kid of eating spaghetti piled high on your piece of garlic toast and relishing every bite. This grown up version of that delightful memory cuts out that middle step and just bakes all that yumminess up together. Lightly toasting the garlic bread first and keeping your meat sauce thick, keeps your “bread boat” from getting soggy as it bakes.

Ingredients

  • 16 ounce Italian bread loaf
  • butter & garlic powder for bread
  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1 pound ground sausage
  • 16 ounce tomato sauce
  • 6 ounce tomato paste
  • 1 medium onion, diced
  • 7 ounce uncooked spaghetti
  • ½ cup Parmesan cheese, divided in half
  • cup Mozzarella cheese, divided in half
  • 1 tablespoon Italian seasoning, generous
  • 1 teaspoon salt + a pinch
  • ½ teaspoon minced garlic
  • ½ teaspoon ground black pepper

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 375° Fahrenheit.

  • In a large sauce pan, boil spaghetti until al dente. Remove from heat and drain.

  • While pasta is cooking, brown beef & sausage in a large skillet over medium heat. Add onion while browning meat. When brown, drain off any excess fat and return to skillet. Add tomato sauce, paste, Italian seasoning, garlic, salt & pepper. Mix well. Simmer for 5-8 minutes. Add cooked pasta. Mix well again and remove from heat.

  • While meat sauce is simmering, cut the Italian bread loaf in half using a bread knife. Carve out the middle of each half of the loaf. Remove any remaining bread to create a large hollow in each half. Brush insides of the hollows and sides of the halves with butter. Sprinkle with garlic powder. Toast in oven.

  • When bread is toasted, spoon the prepared spaghetti & meat sauce into the hollow of each half, filling the hollows completely. (You will have spaghetti & meat sauce left over). Top with cheeses- 1 of the divided halves of the cheeses for one loaf and one for the other.

  • Bake at 375° for 15-20 or until cheese is melted and golden. Remove from oven and gently cut with a bread knife to serve.

Notes

You will have spaghetti and meat sauce left over. You can freeze this and a have a small spaghetti meal later or make a 3rd garlic bread boat using a half of another Italian loaf.

Has anyone tried this with zoodles instead? Afraid it would be soggy…

Hi, Jan! The zoodles will add extra moisture. It’s worth a try though!

If you try with Zoodles . Maybe try in the air fryer. That seems to dry food out more.

Hi, i am trying this out this evening & can’t wait… But I’m just wondering if the bread should be completely frozen until ready to cut & toast also how long should I toast it? It won’t burn baking that long especially after being toasted first!?

    Reply

    • Spaghetti Stuffed Garlic Bread (24)stacey

      Hi, Andrea!

I use fresh bread. If your bread is frozen, it would need to be thawed before you can hollow it out to make a well for your spaghetti.

Also, there is a photo in the post to show how toasted my bread is. There is a nice crisp on the inside. There is no certain time since many broilers (and breads!) toast at different rates. The toasted insides (along with the thicker meat sauce) keeps the bread from getting soggy. So it is important that the bread be toasted.

And lastly, the bread doesn’t burn when baked. When baking, the heat radiates from the bottom of the oven (unlike the broiler, where the heat comes from the top), so the bread just gets nice and crusty all around. If you are worried about some parts of the bread over browning, just cover them with some foil until the bake time is finished!

Making this tonight just curious does the loaded loaf go in the oven on the rack or on a pan?

    Reply

    • Spaghetti Stuffed Garlic Bread (26)stacey

      Hi, Jessica!

I bake mine on a pan, but a pizza stone works really well too for crisping up the bottom. I usually don’t do the rack just in case any of that cheese happens to melt over the edge of the bread. I don’t want it to drip in my oven! Love that you are making this for dinner!

How long do I toast the bread?

    Reply

    • Spaghetti Stuffed Garlic Bread (28)stacey

      Hi, Mackenzie!

You just toast the bread until it is lightly toasted- just a little crisp on the edges and middle. This keeps your “bread boat” from getting soggy.

When you say toast in oven, you mean in the broiler correct?

    Reply

    • Spaghetti Stuffed Garlic Bread (30)stacey

Hi, Rosie! You sure can put it under the broiler or a toaster oven. It is the fastest way. Of course, you can also pop it in that oven that preheating to 375 and crisp it up in there.

Can you freeze this dish! I would love to make it, but I live on my own, so would be too much for me to eat in one sitting.

        • Spaghetti Stuffed Garlic Bread (38)stacey

Hi, Robyn! You sure can! It should keep in the freezer for up to 2 months if wrapped tightly. Thaw overnight in the fridge and heat up or give it that final bake the next day. Enjoy!

I can’t wait to make this recipe! The recipe reminds me of a Italian deli / pizza place near me that makes a meatball sandwich like this without the spaghetti and it’s loaded with cheese and baked like this! It the best meatball boat sandwich I’ve ever had!
